Headaches, watery and dry eyes. The causes and the way out

bolest-hlavy

We all know the feeling. Sometimes our eyes water, sometimes they're too dry, and after a long day at the computer we get a headache. It doesn't have to be that way. Look after your eyesight so it serves you well into old age. The foundation of professional eye care is good-quality prescription glasses and sunglasses.

Why your eyes often water

Do your eyes often burn and water? There can be several causes. External factors include too much bright sunlight, strong wind or smoky environments. Illnesses can include a stye, conjunctivitis, inflamed eyelids or allergies. Last but not least, it can also be down to tiredness and stress.

Eye damage from bright light

You can also damage your eyes with strong bright light , for example:

  • looking at the sun for a long time,
  • sunlight reflecting off white snow,
  • frequent sunbed use,
  • welding
  • or working in an overly bright room.

This damage is called photokeratitis and it usually clears up on its own. It helps to take out your contact lenses, put a cold compress on your eyes and rest in a dark room. And next time, don't forget sunglasses with at least UV400 protection, which blocks up to 99% of UVA and UVB rays.

Why your eyes are often dry

The opposite of watery eyes is dry eyes. Symptoms include tiredness, burning, redness and trouble focusing. Paradoxically, dry eyes can also water a lot, especially after long hours looking at a screen, in smoky environments, in the wind or with advancing age. Another cause can be wearing contact lenses. Moisturising eye drops help with dry eyes. The preservative-free versions are also suitable for contact lenses.

Why you often get headaches

Frequent headaches can have several causes: poor diet, not drinking enough, stress, tiredness, too much physical strain or slouching. Here, though, we'll focus on headaches that come from your eyes. The most common causes are:

  • a stye,
  • inflamed tear glands
  • conjunctivitis,
  • glaucoma,
  • a squint,
  • looking at a computer a lot,
  • the wrong prescription,
  • poor eyesight,
  • presbyopia,
  • mild long-sightedness,
  • short-sightedness,
  • or astigmatism.

Even for healthy eyes, working at a computer all day or staring at a phone is a big strain. Your eyes have to focus up close the whole time, and because of long-term tension in the eye muscles you may feel a headache behind your eyes and in your forehead.

Deal with eye problems as soon as possible

Deal with vision problems as soon as possible. A timely eye examination will help you avoid bigger problems in the future. Excessive watering and burning, long-lasting headaches or dry eyes can often be fixed with new prescription glasses or sun glasses made to suit your needs. The key step is always expert advice and consultation.
